Well what can I say (Beat-Boxing, Electro House, Tech House, Electro, Breaks, Jump-Up Drum and Bass, Jungle, Hip Hop and Funk) this was all new to me until I entered the Revolution bar (revs) on Friday the 18- 4-08. I’m more of an Indie-band man myself but I love checking out new stuff. So when I heard that there was a Beatboxer in town I was well interested. The line up consisted of seven acts including:
Beardyman Dom Almond Little Jo Three Sixty Relentless Konnect Gusher & Muff & snoosh on a MULTI DECK SET
I found out about this night literally on the day of it happening and not realizing how much there was to take in I had no time to prepare. I tried gathering as much info as I could to give the dance scene the best write-up I could. Coz from what I’ve seen this gig looks like it could be a way of life. So with the Revs bar being the only real underground club in Milton Keynes and talking to fans I know there is a big cry-out for this type of genre. People would be more than happy if there was a regular occurrence of Beatcheck but sadly at the moment bods can only look forward to Beatcheck playing host every third Friday of the month.
I’ve done a little research on Beardyman and from what I’ve gathered, is really big right now. So I thought it was reasonable with it being four pound at the door. Darren Foreman born 14-5-82 alias BeardyMan the beatboxer/DJ from Brighton won the UK beatboxing championship 2006/07 being the first ever to win two championships in a row. Called Beardyman because when he first kicked off had a beard. He has gigged and recorded with Klum-Z-Tung, together in 2005 presenting Get Lucky TV’s 'The Freestyle Show”. He has done a fair bit of charity and TV work and in 08 appeared as a YouTube Hero. The man has supported Groove Armada and has worked alongside people such as Andy C, Killa kela, Grooverider, Jazzy Jeff and Shy FX to name but a few.
So yeah! a big act at Revolutions small bar. This bar surprisingly is a lot bigger than what it seems. A bit like Doctor Who’s Tardis, making room if full for about nine hundred heads. Of this type of genre Revs has been host to previous guests including: Ali B, The Freestylers, Stanton warriors, Fingerlickin' Records, The Breakfastaz, Soul of man, A Skillz, The Drumattic Twins and other DJs on Beatcheck’s list. There were people of all ages present with an average age range of about 20-25 plus. For a young bunch I found the crowd to be very friendly. Revolution plays host not only to Beatcheck but other showcases as well. Look out for future events.
Because I spent most of the night on the ground floor I only really caught Beardyman and Little Jo, who as well as being tiny and extremely cute was an impressive (little being the appropriate word) DJ. I'm not sure what she was doing on the decks but whatever it was, she was doing it right coz it sounded excellent, this being confirmed by just how nuts the crowd were going. With the downstairs having no dancefloor the whole bar was bouncing with male and females alike. Beardyman started the night off with his Beatboxing act carried on later with his vocal talents being accompanied by Breakbeat. Downstairs The Beard roared with Little Jo filling in on his breaks. I didn’t notice anyone else sharing the decks so I presume the rest of the acts played upstairs, I was told Konnect played downstairs. I briefly went up to the second floor where like below the crowd was pumping. I have to admit as I’ve already said the music was havin-it. I was there just to take some photos and try to get an interview but found myself dancing along side everyone else.
Seeing Beardyman was great but being able to see and interview local MK acts is really what we're interested in. As you know I didn't witness all the performers but I did get to interview a couple. The first one being with Tim Day aka Relentless from MK who’s been working on his craft for 8yrs. He started doing House then Garage, Drum and Bass and finally slipped into his comfort zone of Breakbeat. The software packages he uses range from Cubase to Soundforge to LogicPro etc. His name comes from the drink Relentless, which he told me “like him is a stimulant to the people”. He’s very much inspired by the prodigy and so his sound is similar. He’s shared nights with the likes of Beardyman (obviously) and Groovedigger. I asked him does he have any bad habits, he said he “picks nose, chews the inside of his lip” and laughing said “he humps the bed in his sleep”. Tim said he was most proud of doing his first gig which was in front of six hundred people including his girlfriend and her mum. Relentless is 26 and works for Coca Cola. The second interview was with the DJ Three Sixty who’s 30yrs old from Milton Keynes. He’s been DJ’ing for about 12yrs and got his name from extreme sports. He describes his music as Fat Funky Breakbeat. He's inspired by the likes of the Stanton Warriors and Plump DJs and said his sound is similar to Fat Boy Slim. As well as being a DJ Three Sixty like Relentless holds down a full-time job as a self employed dry liner. When it comes to bad habits he grinds his teeth and will accidentally spit in his girlfriends face when talking whilst drunk. His girlfriend (Sara) was present during the interview and said jokingly "that's why she fancies him so much". He's most proud of seeing the crowd go wild at his gigs or seeing the smile on their face as he performs. He's also proud of the relationship he and his girlfriend have created (aw bless). I asked him what has been the highlight of his DJ'ing career, he said it has to be his warm ups for the Stanton Warriors (his own personal heros). Both guys where really laid back and easy to talk to. If I had of known they were from Milton Keynes I would of spent some time checking them out. I'll be looking out for them in the future now though. To contact Three Sixty please email: stumc360@googlemail.com
